Social landlord and East Midlands Chamber promote Black History Month

Leicestershire-based social housing and care organisation emh group and the East Midlands Chamber have joined forces to promote Black History Month, which starts on Thursday 1st October.

Throughout October the two organisations will be running a social media campaign celebrating Black history, arts, and culture and the positive impact it has made on our society. As well as posting key information about inspirational Black figures both current and historical, they will also be providing links to events and activities happening across the region and beyond.

Black History Month began as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of the worldwide collection of communities descended from native sub-Saharan Africans.

Scott Knowles, Chief Executive at East Midlands Chamber, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with emh group in celebrating and recognising the achievements, influence and contributions of African and Caribbean communities by supporting the Black History Month throughout October.

“From across the worlds of sport, music, culture and business, the East Midlands has a proud heritage of Black role models whose impact has been felt beyond the region - from Viv Anderson becoming the first Black footballer to represent England, to the cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason becoming the first Black person to win the BBC Young Musician award, and then performing at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

“There are many more examples of inspiring success stories among these communities, and we invite people from across the East Midlands to join us throughout October in this celebration, while looking out for some of the exciting activities you can take part in.”

Chan Kataria OBE, Chief Executive of emh group, added: “Building on our strong joint commitment to promoting diversity across the region, we are proud to be partnering with the East Midlands Chamber to celebrate the achievements of Black communities during Black History Month.

“We aim to recognise the contribution and impact made by individuals and groups from our Black communities and invite everyone to participate through a series of virtual activities. At a challenging time for everyone due to Covid-19, it is important that we celebrate the things that make our communities great, and diversity is truly at the heart of that.”
